Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility. German anatomist Joseph Pilates wanted to create a disciplined physical fitness system in the early 20th century. It was mainly used to help English vets recover from injuries sustained during World War I.

Over the decades, Pilates has gone to different countries. The Pilates method focuses on the core muscle strength, resistance training and spine alignment and it could be followed by people of all ages. The coordination of mind, body and spirit as Joseph Pilates called “contrology.” In his first book published in 1945, Pilates’ Return to Life through Contrology, the 34 original exercises that Pilates taught to his students are described along with the guiding principles of contrology

Over the years, this fitness system has gained immense popularity. In India, celebrities including Bollywood stars have adopted it; yet there is a lack of trained professionals and proper studios.

In India, celebrity fitness trainer Yasmin Karachiwala is considered to be the pioneer of Pilates. The Mumbai-based expert is India’s first Body Arts and Science Institute (BASI)-certified Pilates instructor who has also penned Sculpt and Shape: The Pilates Way. 

Difference between Yoga and Pilates

One of the main differences between yoga and Pilates is that yoga can be used for improving the flexibility of the body and  joints. Also, Yoga is more about mind-body connection, whereas Pilates focuses on trying to relax muscles which are tense and provides strength to the numerous muscles in the body.

Pilates works on your core. A strong core—which includes your abs, obliques, and lower back muscles—helps keep your body balanced and stable.
