As the Corona Virus Pandemic spreads around the world and public anxieties spike, historical comparisons are being made between today’s situation and the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918.
The fear of the future, doctors not knowing what to do or prescribe, stock piling of essential food items by people, surgical masks, cruel social isolation of people and an economic meltdown. Amidst all this, heart-wrenching stories have emerged from across the world which shocks our conscience and questions everything that we take for granted in our lives.
Quoting from the Christian worldview, “The heavens are yours; the earth also is Yours; and world and all that is in it. You have founded them.” Is this really so? Do we need a paradigm shift in our thinking? We think so. Nothing really belongs to us and we are mere tourists on this planet earth. Our search for understanding everything will never come to an end and the challenge of science, nature and discovery will go on forever.
A story of a Paraplegic kid being left to fend for himself. He lost his mother to the virus while his father was quarantined. There were social media requests to take care of the child but nobody could help as everybody was in isolation in Wuhan.
In Italy, a woman had to stay with her husband’s dead body for about four days as in the Ghost town nobody could come forward to help her with the funeral.
A last hug, a final kiss …seems like we are asking for too much. 29 year old Rehan, whose parents were isolated for treatment, they died in the hospital and they took away the bodies for cremation in bulk from the hospital for fear of the virus spreading.”
A newborn baby in London has been diagnosed with Covid-19 becoming the pandemics youngest confirmed case. Now, the child is isolated from his mother. There are many more such heart wrenching stories.
The borders are sealed and each country is focusing only on their territory as of now. But in a separate development, Chinese businessman Jack Ma, who is the founder of the Alibaba Group and among the world’s richest people, offered to donate 500,000 corona virus testing kits and one million masks to the United States, which on Friday declared a national emergency over the outbreak.
In a statement on Twitter, Jack Ma said: “Drawing from my own country’s experience, speedy and accurate testing and adequate protective equipment for medical professionals are most effective in preventing the spread of the virus.”
“We hope that our donation can help Americans fight against the pandemic!”
Over the past weeks, Ma’s organizations have helped provide similar supplies to virus-hit countries such as Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran and Spain.
