*Irrfan Khan dies of Neuroendocrine Tumour

*What is Neuroendocrine Tumour?

Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, who also acted in British and American films, breathed his last yesterday. The silent superstar who acted in path breaking films like`Slumdog Millionaire’, Lunch Box and `Life of Pi’ was suffering from a rare disease called `Neuroendocrine tumour.’ The disease was detected in 2018 and the actor was taking treatment for it out of the country.

On Tuesday, the actor was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Mumbai due to colon infection. Colitis is a general term for inflammation of the inner lining of the colon, which is our large intestine. The infection colitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites. Infection colitis can be contracted from contaminated water, foodborne illnesses or poor hygiene.

 

 Understanding Neuroendocrine Tumour

Neuroendocrine tumour, or shortened as NET, is basically a condition in which an abnormal tissue growth arises in the hormone producing nervous cells (or neuroendocrine cells) of the body. NET may develop slowly or aggressively and can develop in the intestines, lungs, pancreas or anywhere in the rest of the body. After development, the tumour may spread to other body parts.

An endocrine tumour refers to the development of tumours in the hormone-producing or the endocrine cells of the body. But when those cells are also nerve cells, the condition becomes neuroendocrine tumour.
Whether or not the tumour is serious depends on if it is benign or malignant. This depends on the affected body part and if the growth has spread to and affected other parts of the body!

The survival rates for NET depends on many factors such as the affected body organs, whether the tumour is benign or malignant, so on and so forth. The disease is otherwise considered rare and is actually a broad term used to refer to a heterogeneous group of neoplasms.

 Irrfan’s Filmography

Irrfan Khan’s last movie was ‘Angrezi Medium’, which hit the screens days before the Covid lockdown was announced and was later released on an OTT platform. His most famous films include the Academy Award-nominated Salaam Bombay!, Maqbool (2004), Paan Singh Tomar (2011), The Lunchbox (2013), Haider (2014), Gunday (2014), Piku (2015) and Talvar (2015) and Hindi Medium (2017).

Not many know that Irrfan Khan also did a Bangladeshi film ‘No Bed Of Roses’ and portrayed a famous writer who dies in the end with a disease. Coincidentally, Irrfan died with the same disease.

Film was also selected as the Bangladeshi entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. The film is streaming on iflix a streaming platform in Malaysia.

Irrfan was a method actor and  a student of drama. In the beauty obsessed Bollywood industry his theatrical perfection came across with subtle nuances like his heavy eyes, sly smile, bored look, and perfect comic timing. The actor was very relatable and middle class and almost all his projects were a hit and critically acclaimed.
