Mumbai –the city that never sleeps

Mumbai, (also known as Bombay) India’s Global city, has made rapid progress since independence in terms of trade and services. The mostly densely populated city, it is said that `Mumbai never sleeps.’ A leading symbol of` megacities’ in South Asia, the city is home to Corporate India, fashion, films, and entertainment industry and  hosts 40 Consulates,  best five star hotels, restaurants and Universities.  Millions throng to the city every year in search of their dreams. Only the persistent survive here,  as the city can get `overwhelming’ at some point.

Several major Corporates are headquatered in Mumbai –like the Tata Group, Reliance Industries and the Aditya Birla Group. Referred to as the city of dreams, it has slums and skyscrapers, pauper and millionaires, fisherfolks and artists. With a pace of its own, Mumbai has the world’s most expensive real estate and the most densely populated slum of Asia, Dharavi. The city also provides jobs to many semi skilled people, hawkers, taxi drivers, road side thelas.

One has never ever seen empty streets and local trains in Mumbai. But somehow, the Coronavirus lockdown has made this possible.

The city has emerged a COVID hotspot.  With no local trains  and cabs, the streets are empty. The air quality has improved and the sea is clearer. This year an exceptional number of flamingos have migrated to the Mumbai Metropolitan region.
